A letter to the principals regarding work to rule . . .
As principal responsible for the Dartmouth All City music program I wanted to clarify a few issues around our program in light of the job action we are facing. Please note the following points regarding the music program:
- The Dartmouth All-City band, choral and string teachers are NSTU teachers.
- Their classes are not extracurricular, they are co-curricular.
- Their teaching schedules often don’t happen within the normal instructional day: Some occur in the evenings and others, particularly elementary string classes, are during class times, before and after school and at lunch. Please note that it is their contractual obligation to teach these scheduled classes and rehearsals. They are not violating Work to Rule.
- Just like in all of the schools across the province, all of our All-City events, performances and extracurricular activities from December 5th on have been cancelled until further notice.
Please share this information with all of your staff. It is imperative that everyone in your school knows that our teachers are only teaching their regularly scheduled classes as required contractually. It is important that they are able to get into the buildings and their designated teaching areas for their scheduled teaching time.
